Warriors in the Workplace

Warriors who work have a great deal to juggle.  Some choose not to try to work, some cannot work for various reasons and some may choose to work part-time.  I do believe that any kind of work can be done, you just have to make sure you believe in your “why” and push through it.

Keeping up with the doctor visits, the days off school, the school paperwork, the days off due to snow, the professional development days, the summer program, a respite program and all the details is a job in itself.  Not to mention the pharmacies, medical supply companies, unpredictable bed times and making your life fit the child you care for.  Then don’t forget things like getting modifications to your home for bathing and getting a wheelchair inside your home.  More things that are very time consuming.

I think it’s safe to say for any of us Warriors working full time plus having our child is working two full time jobs.  One has benefits of the corporate kind.  Days off, parties at work, feeling good about your career, feeling normal as you work when this life is not feeling normal.  But you must  carry the load of the caretaking at home.  The other added benefit is the other things that working outside the home brings to the soul.  Deep down we desire the “normalcy” that we don’t have.   Work can bring that to us.

The other job, the caretaking, gives us benefits of the heart.  The compassionate feeling of what we do is out of love and a choice to keep our child at home.  The grueling part of it gives the reward of the greatness of how life is appreciated in ways that cannot be written.  There are no easy words to explain what helping your child who cannot help themselves really feels like.  It is beyond measure.

I’ve recently had other Warrior moms tell me how helpful their job is to the role they play at home. These Warriors are working for companies that are helpful in the demand we carry.  They let moms work from a laptop at a hospital for many days or weeks.  They understand they will need more sick days. They are helpful.  Hooray to these companies!  Thank you for being human!

I recently had to have Anna at work with me for about 30 minutes.  Paul was going to get a quick beard trim, and what do you know, they called a half day of the day of his appointment and only told us two days before.  Enter an understanding employer.  My employer was good with Anna popping in and sitting with me while Paul had his appointment.  This is beyond helpful.  It makes our lives much easier when we are always piecing the puzzle of needs vs. work vs. life events.

Hats off to the workplaces that allow us to bend and mold to the life we live.  It is truly needed by us.  We do work hard to make things smooth, but workplaces who buffer us in between are a true gem.

Update on Lily:

Last update was that she is holding her feeds better and they are hoping to go home in the next few weeks.  They are not sure of her lung issues but she needs to get stronger and back to her baseline before any more invasive procedures.  Mom is tired but strong and holding out well in all areas.  She has a great supportive husband and a job that lets her work as described above.  These companies are so very helpful to our lifestyle.  Send extra love and prayer their way.
