2025
I’m blogging with my girl as we sit on our couch together. She’s playing with her rattle and I’m reflecting on the new year ahead; and the beautiful year behind us. I’m cooking a quiche with homemade fried potatoes that I made this morning and ham leftover from Christmas. This sounds mouthwatering after my 3 mile run. It’s already been a great day. It’s 1:30 p.m.
I do like resolutions, or goals as they really are. I think my bucket list was too large last year, go figure, I’m a Warrior Mom and a Capricorn, a dangerous combo. I thought about just three goals I will make for Anna this year and they are inspiring me. Skate, run and read.
Skate: Here’s how it’s going to happen. I had a generous monetary gift from Anna’s grandpa, Grandpa McCann. I have been thinking about going skating again with her. DId you know you can take a wheelchair right out on the rink and skate? I might have mentioned this before in a blog, but I’m over the moon about it. It seems so welcoming and fair to children and adults who cannot walk or stand. We did this before Covid and then life got busy and I haven’t found my way back. This is the year. I’m going to buy some skates for myself so that I can take Anna. I have a goal of 1-2 times per month. I’m hoping for two but I have so many plans for our weekdays that I’ll be happy just starting again. I’d love to have my own skates. It’s hard to rent them, decide where to put Anna while I’m managing this and then feel like they don’t feel that good on my feet. If I am the transporter of Anna on the roller rink then we should have nice wheels right? So I’ll use the gift to buy skates that in essence, Anna and I will share. We usually go to the skate center in Plymouth, MI. It’s called Riverside Arena 36655 Plymouth Rd, open invitation to any mom who wants to meet up there! We’re going to try for Wednesdays where they have a family night and it’s 6-8 pm.
I always love to see the kids take Anna in on the rink. They need to see that other’s skate in other ways and we can all co-exist! Plus I love to skate. It brings back my elementary years where we went to the Great Skate on Hayes every Friday night and it was marvelous fun.
Run: We’ve been running for years and I’ve already scheduled our first 5K. It’s at Kensington Metro Park, the run will benefit Michigan Hands and Voices and it’s at 11. 1/11 at 11 am. It’s not mandatory that you run, I just cannot walk once I see a trail my legs start running! I’ll share the link here in case anyone is interested in challenging themselves and getting out in the beautiful January air. We also found out we can run inside at my local gym, The Romulus Athletic Center. I can run with her jogging stroller and I’m starting this next week. I run outside year round but Anna’s hands freeze. Even with gloves she doesn’t have the ability to move them like she should so I can’t run outdoors with her from November until April. This indoor gig is a dream, afterall I can’t run in the mall!
Read: The reading part, I’m embarrassed to say, but will honestly say, I’ve been trying to read to Anna for about ten years. I buy the books, I set them in the living room, I don’t get to it, they end up on her bookshelf. Her class had a book exchange this year and it just lit up my thoughts that this is the year. Plus, I can hand some books down to her sweet niece, Elsie Jane. So I’m reading to her today, and I’m feeling accomplished.
Our holidays were great and comical at the same time. I ordered two pairs of shoes online for Anna and both had to be returned and resized for her. She has only slept in two days of the whole winter break so I’m looking forward to Monday, January 6, 2025. I need to see that bus at the end of my driveway! Yes, we make due, but boy I need that hard time of 6:30 back to get her on her way and me running in the streets before work. I crave routine as I’ve said before.
Highlights of 2024: I’ve joined a new group and was invited to be on the board. It’s called FAN (Face Addiction Now https://faceaddictionnow.org/support/northwest). I’m in the Northwest Wayne Chapter and I’m feeling great to serve and I’ll be telling my story on 1/6/25. I love seeing my darling granddaughter and it’s heaven to see my other daughter be a superb mother. Grant is thriving in Germany serving our country. Anna has been healthy and was never hospitalized once in 2024! So much to be pleased and thankful for. Looking forward to a happy and healthy 2025. Here’s to all my Warrior Moms, happiest New Year and “Let’s do this.”
