Dressing Rooms

I think this title is a source of stress for any mother.  Now add the Warrior to that idea.  A dressing room with your child in a wheelchair. How about your child that might not want to stay in the room, maybe crawl or look under the walls? Some of the walls do not go to the ground.  How about shouters?  The kids who cannot keep their sweet mouths from moving.  Well, you can see that this idea poses a challenge for the moms here that we call Warriors.

After church a few Sundays ago I was longing to hit Macy’s.  I was talking to a co-worker and was told the Paris Hilton display at Macy’s had some great Karl Lagerfeld clothing.  I have been reading his books lately.  I wanted to go see what I could find.  I hoped for the best when taking Anna with me.  You never know how this can take a turn.  There could be many obstacles, but I always do what I want with Anna beside me.  If I want it I go after it;  Anna in tow.

We got to the mall and it wasn’t open.  Like wow.  I never planned on this.  Well, to be exact, Macy’s wasn’t open.  In a normal situation, you might get back in the car and wait.  Well, I had just unbuckled four tie-downs on a wheelchair, an over the chair strap, grabbed my purse, phone off the dash, waiting for the ramp to open, wheeled out and shut the van and locked it only to see close to the doors that the store had 12 minutes before it opened.  Not to mention I had secured a nice handicapped spot.  Not a normal one, the kind that has the “Van Accessible” and has extra room to get in and out.  I did not want to lose my spot!

I did not fear.  It was a bit warmer that day, thankfully.  Warm enough to circle around to a mall entrance.  I knew the mall was likely open for walkers.  So I wheeled Anna over to the next entrance, and she was happy as a lark.  She had her fleece coverall and her hat on so we just went around, and by the time I walked through the mall to Macy’s, it was almost opening.  We made it work.  That’s Warriors do.

We shopped, and Anna tried to pull things off the racks, that’s her happy thing to do.  I found several things to try on.  I pushed toward the dressing room and crossed my fingers.  I wheeled in and saw a nice dressing room overall.  Then it stood out to me.  The best corner dressing room with a beautiful wheelchair sign on the door.  Hot damn, a handicapped dressing room!  Macy’s, I love you.  We slid in there, and I had room to try things on, and Anna did not have to be parked outside the room or crammed inside with me.  It was a great little shopping morning with Anna.  It is a fact that places that can accommodate us help us in so many ways.  You can bet Anna and I will be taking more shopping trips there in the near future.  Both of my girls love to shop, and  I am one lucky Warrior mom.

Shop on!
