Long Busy Grinding Days of Summer

As I’ve said before, “Lazy days of summer” is a twisted term for me.  Summer is the busiest and most unorganized time of our year.  Anna is out of school, and we try to make a routine, which is a joke in itself.  There is no routine to days that have no bus to scurry for.  It’s nice that Anna gets to sleep in, but we are very busy every minute of the summer break.  It’s only a break from school.  It is not a break for us Warrior moms.

Someday when school ends we will move toward a “home routine.”  For now, it’s a wild card.  Will Anna wake up before I go to work?  Will I hurry and change her while I’m also getting ready because she might fall back asleep?  Will I be in the shower enjoying the sudsy shampoo on my hair and hear her suddenly awake?  Once I wake Paul he’s up and he’s off kilter for the whole day, so I tend to rush in there and get her set for more sleep or get her up and let Paul know he is now awake too, his little girl has started her day! I hope she sleeps in every morning;  but I Never know.  There have been countless times that just as I take that first sip of coffee, and sit on the couch for 5 minutes I hear her.  She demands my attention.  And I do willingly, but the whole morning is now under her control.  I have to wake Paul at times.  But then I have both of them to maneuver while I try to get out of the house.  Grinding mornings of summer.

Anna will attend summer school, but it’s different hours.  I have to get ready for work while I get her ready.  I then hope the bus is on time.  I have to workout from 5:30-6:30 in order to get ready, so everything is backwards.  She gets home at 1:30 instead of 2:30.  We are grateful for the extended school year.  This year Anna’s teacher has named the summer program as an “Art Camp.”  We are looking forward to what she brings home.  I’ll post her projects here.

And there is the inside of the house and the outside of a home to take care of in Michigan.  I love my little garden and my flowers.  I have water them every day, sometimes twice!  I cut the grass, we have a pool, I like to take Anna on lots of walks, we like to have get-togethers, and the list goes on.  But there is no LAZY in the word summer.

So Anna has two more half days and then the summer hits us like a tornado and takes over.  It is fast and furious.  I like all aspects of it, but it is NOT a lazy time of year.  I think it should be called the lazy days of winter and summer is then a blue light special that you dash madly for and hope to get a glimpse of the gorgeous season in Michigan.

Anna’s class gave her a sweet little gift for summer.  She is one loved and spoiled student.  The staff gives so much to her that we are lucky to have them.  So here we go, Summer 2026 take a hold of us, use us, chew us up, and spit us out for more.
