Scarecrows All Around

This year dressing up for one of my (if not the most favorite holidays) was a unique decision.  I wanted something themed since we would be taking Elsie to Halloween Nights at the Henry Ford Museum.  So I didn’t want to look like a witch with a green face for that sweet little 14 month granddaughter of mine.  For Anna, it’s always a bit tricky.  She will not keep makeup on or any kind of hat.  A wig is out of the question.  She will be sitting down, does not wear dresses well as she treats them like a parachute to play with.  So we have limitations.  The whole gamut of them.  And she cannot hold props like daggers or anything.  So I decided to make it easy by being scarecrows.  I could half make and half buy the costumes.  I take these costumes seriously.  So the fun began.

I bought Anna clothes in the boy section of Walmart because I needed a plaid long sleeve shirt and brown (scarecrow) pants.  Just as I thought I found them easily and in her size in the boys department.  I also wanted something she could wear again.   Mission accomplished.

We had my annual Halloween Party early this year because of trips our family has planned.  Since I work two weekends a month, I have to choose one of only two weekends.  I’ve discovered I like to have it early because then we can enjoy the season.  Dress up again likely and keep all the fun decorations out for longer after the party.  The party was great and all guests seemed to have a great time.

We went to Halloween Nights the day after the party.  It was funny because Paul was groaning about our schedule.  I get it. I plan alot. And I’ve always tried to plan nothing the day after a party but that is not always possible.  He was funny and made me laugh.  I said pull up your bootstraps and get more energized.  A great Warrior term.  He looked at me as if my face had turned green.  He said, “You are the Warrior, I never claimed to be one.”  There’s no rest for the energetic mom!  I had already been to brunch on the other side of town with my high school friends! (and attended church!) We got ready and hit the road.

Paul was dragging his feet and complaining about being dressed up again.  I told him lots of families will be in costume.  I’m not sure he believed me.  We walked in and all he could see was kids dressed up.  I tried to reassure him but I guess he felt silly being a scarecrow.  Not me, I am in hog heaven in costume.  I love to dress up.  I hope my granddaughter likes it too because I will play dress up with her anytime.  So back to the event, we were sitting and waiting for the gates to open and waiting for Gabby Eric and Elsie to arrive.

Just then I saw it.  It was one of those things that just makes you so happy your whole body gets warm.  My face began to smile without any thought or effort.  Here comes the sweetest little girl with her parents in the littlest pink wheelchair you can imagine.  It brought me back to when Anna had her first wheelchair.  They smiled at us because we have a connection like no other, Warriors, we see this instantly.  And low and behold their sweet girl was also a scarecrow!  Paul beamed and now he loved his costume.  The couple said we looked great and it was a mutual connection to be there with our girls in wheelchairs and both as scarecrows.  The gates opened and the rush started, no time for a photo.  That’s okay, the memory is so good a photo was not necessary.

So onto the other fall happenings, haunted houses, crock pot meals, bonfires, furnaces going on in our homes.  This season is great.  I’m excited for what is ahead.
